Overthrown puts players into a chaotic but defined city-building game in a world that exists in a fantasy forest. In Guardians of the Crown players become the ruler of the kingdom who possesses the cursed crown that takes souls and gives special powers to the ruler. This crown let the players form kingdoms and fight with bandits and feral mutants. But that’s not all: players have to collect resources, bother with the ground, arrange their people to transform estate into independent kingdom.

In Overthrown there is an element of versatility in the game’s mechanics, as well as using the element of surprise. Players can construct anywhere without any effects on their settlements, and construction of buildings can be done by simply picking them up and placing them elsewhere. This feature is particularly concerned with flexibility and allows players to have some ideas of their own. Multiplayer mode for up to six players opens up opportunities for cooperation and competition with other players because cooperation partners can become competitors for possession.

Resource management becomes creative through the force of the crown. Entire trees can be towed to the mill site while the mill or the raw material collecting plant can move around to pick resources as needed. Combat also disrupts conventional procedures, making for highly fluid, bordering on the fantastical- rescuing villagers by flying over a lake or indeed attacking camps of bandits from above. Seasonality subsists, which means that gamers have to constantly farm, defend, and store, their resources. These can cause certain problems, for instance, winter needs preparation because mutants become much more active and food can also be a problem.
