Firewatch has an emotional prologue of Henry, a man seeking to leave behind his troubled past. It starts out by following Henry through pivotal moments in his life-indeed, the day he meets his wife-to-be, the day they fall in love, and the painful problems that the disease imposes on them as her Alzheimer’s advances. Unable to cope with this reality, Henry escapes to Wyoming to take a job as a fire lookout for a remote national park.

The life for Henry consists in watching the trivial routine of safety fire from a lonely observation tower in the park. His friend and companion is only Delilah, his counterpart park ranger, with whom he communicates with only radios. Altogether, the entire story progresses on dialogues between them, your choices there shaping up the relationship and the direction of the story. It is a somberly dramatic story with no thrilling combat or precarious physical feats, but the weight of Henry’s emotional situation propels the plot forward.

As Henry goes along, he must perform everyday but essential acts: collecting dry twigs, expelling some of the park’s law-breakers, and putting out any fires that may be starting throughout the park. He is armed with an axe for clearing a path as well as a map and compass to help find his way across the vast expanse of wilderness. The park itself has four discrete sections: Poplar Creek, Wapiti Meadow, Thorofare Tower, and the Cave, all with new locations to discover.

No superhuman abilities in this game, no fake movement mechanism, like jumping and running. It feels grounded which also enhances that feeling of isolation. This has taken out the chance of having that combat mode that would allow you to head-first dive into the slow-burning narrative and the stunning atmospheric world around you.

Basically Firewatch is a story about relationships we create as well as personal development in solitude. The game brings the player into some emotional battle through the eyes of Henry where all decision-making and conversation leads one to either understand and obtain closure.
