Developing your character in Caves of Qud is pretty much like playing the scientist gone insane. Looking for wings, burning hands, and two faces? Go for it. You know, just add some enhancements to the cyborg yourself; Easter egg bionic springs in ankles, for instance, or steel fists as a bonus. Singletons in excess of 70, mutants in the dozens, implants to satisfyingly sink into the cerebral cortex with – these genetic building blocks will allow you to go full wild.

Too much pressure Not a problem too much because before opening the floodgates on complete freedom, there are presets to begin with. Whether you’re a strategist or a total noob, there’s a mode for you: It can be the good old permadeath, chilling exploration, RPG saving system, or even a strict daily mode to see how many days a player survives.

Caves of Qud, after 15 years of continuous development, has now reached a 1.0 version and it’s now more developed than before. Step it up to a new graphical interface, new visual and sound effects, and the last part of its epic main story line. It’s the best blend of narrative design and true procedural generation, and it feels alive a concept most games don’t even begin to approach.
