Beyond Hanwell challenges players to step into an interactive ‘post-apocalyptic’ London. Westminster is where the title is set and where once friendly and recognizable places may have a dark side. Logs that players will face during this eerie place are the various challenges and threats from the anomalies. It has no shortage of tension in the game where the principle objectives are survival and exploration.

Aside from Hanwell’s gameplay are the high values places on positional play and usage of the setting. This can include the game character positioning of various items and elements that are placed around them to fight the enemies like setting trap or using a particular environment. This interaction transfers to the dual combat system whereby the players can fight hand to hand using primarily actual combat and actual attacks in combination. The ammunition and weapons are limited and rare causing the player to search and make ration decisions about the items.

It is the kind of concept where everything is discovered and tweaked rather than described in a specific order. Unlike the events in the game, the player navigates the ruins independently, while exploring the concept and solving the mystery of the Director. Such an open approach to setting construction takes one common aspect but makes everyone’s game unique based on their choices and finds. The absence of that typical HUD makes the player to blend in with the game environment making it more immersive. This design choice keeps tension and requires the users to concentrate on the threats and surroundings at the current stage.
